Things to remember when hunting for work

  • Treat job searching as your job – it is something that you need to do everyday and something that you need to do well
  • Keep a routine – If your job would require you to get up and start at 8am then keep that routine when looking for work, it makes it easier to get back into the groove once you do find a job, also if you know that you work better 1st thing in the morning then that’s when your job searching should be done.
  • Try to keep your life interesting while looking for work, get out exercise in between job searching sessions. It will keep the motivation levels high and stop you from getting totally disheartened by sending out applications.
  • Take your time with job searching, you may allow yourself 2 hours a day to look for work and if it takes you 2 hours to write a really good cover letter and tailor your CV to one job that’s ok, each application should be tailored and that takes time, better to send out a few quality applications than lots of average applications.
  • Keep a record of jobs that you have applied for, write them down in a diary or note pad, there is nothing worse for an employer than calling about an application and they don’t know what job your talking about.
  • Follow up on your applications, Leave a reasonable time frame before you call but do call to ensure that they have received your applications.
  • Smile when you talk on the phone, it does show through.
  • While it is a good idea to register with recruitment companies, they are only a small part of job hunting and you cannot rely on other people to find you work.
  • When you are looking for jobs, before applying for them research the company that is advertising, that way your not going to waste your time applying with a company that you don’t want to work for and also when the employer calls you to discuss your applications you seem like you have made effort and can wow the employer with your knowledge and initiative.
  • Research the pay rate for that industry, if you have a salary that you must earn and that industry is not paying that high then maybe think twice before applying and wasting yours and the employers time.
  • Make sure that you ask your referees if it is ok that you put them on your resume, it is much better than an employer having the embarrassing conversation when they say that they are not happy to give a reference. Also when an employer calls you and says they will be contacting your referees give them a call and heads up so that they are expecting to hear from the employer.
  • Practise interview questions. Research online typical interview questions and get a friend or family member to practise them with you. Just be careful that when you go to an interview you don’t seem rehearsed.
